摘要：

It has long been accepted that world demand for energy will increase steadily for the foreseeable future, but more intensive exploitation of conventional sources seemed to provide an adequate supply. Now, however, the situation has entirely changed. Nonrenewable fuels need to be conserved and are ecologically unpopular; nuclear power presents social and political problems; renewable sources such as wind and tidal power still present technological difficulties. In these circumstances recent developments in photovoltaic devices assume a new significance.
