ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE STUDY OF PHENYL RADICALS ISOLATED IN AN ARGON MATRIX AT 4 DEGREES K

A well-resolved esr spectrum was obtained from phenyl radicals generated and isolated by photolysis of phenyl iodide in an argon matrix at 4°K. Its analysis led to the assessment of both the isotropic and anisotropic parts of the hyperfine interaction terms with all the protons. The results for the isotropic coupling constants are: Aortho = +17.4 ± 0.1, Ameta = +5.9 ± 0.1, and Apara = +1.9 ± 0.1 G. The unpaired electron was found to be localized mostly in the nonbonding σ; orbital centered at the 1 carbon. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
