POTENTIAL DEPENDENCE OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL TRANSFER-COEFFICIENT - IMPEDANCE STUDY OF THE REDUCTION OF AROMATIC-COMPOUNDS

The electrochemical electron transfer rate of five aromatic compounds (nitromesitylene, nitrodurene, terephthalonitrile, phthalonitrile, p-diacetylbenzene) have been determined in DMF as a function of the dc electrode potential by using an ac impedance technique with frequencies ranging from 1000 to 20000 Hz. The transfer coefficient was observed to vary with potential beyond experimental uncertainty in all cases. The magnitude of the variation is on the same order as that predicted by the Marcus theory of outer-sphere electron transfers. This behavior observed for various solvents and functional groups appears as a general phenomenon in the reduction of organic molecules in aprotic solvents, i.e., in the case where charge transfer is fast and mainly governed by solvent reorganization. © 1979 American Chemical Society.
