LENS PROTEINS AS MARKERS OF TERMINAL DIFFERENTIATION

摘要
The differentiation of lens epithelial cells to fiber cells is a typical example of terminal differentiation. Molecular changes that accompany the differentiation process can easily be followed by analysis of newly synthesized protein. As far as the soluble protein is concerned fibrogcncsis is accompanied by a shift in subunit composition of α-and β-crystallin. The most striking morphological event in lens cell differentiation is the extremely high increase in plasma membrane formation during elongation in the fiber cells. On a molecular level this event is associated with the biosynthesis of the major plasma membrane constituent MP26. The polysomes carrying the corresponding messenger RNA are found to be attached to the cytoskeleton-plasma membrane complex. © 1979 S. Karger AG, Basel.
