摘要：

Leave provision in the European Community has developed in general around the needs of pre-school children. This article summarises the available provision and examines the leave requirements of parents of school-age children. Evidence on how parents in the United Kingdom cope with such problems as child sickness or the need to visit their child's school in working time is contrasted with parents' experience of family leave in Sweden. The Swedish data informs the discussion of possible policy options for the Community. The article emphasises the need for a more systematic and bolder approach by the European Commission in developing provisions in this area.
