Electron microscopy of a series of experimentally detached retinas in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) revealed degeneration of the outer segments of both macular and midperipheral rods and cones. Surgical reattachment of the retina resulted in rapid regeneration of outer-segment lamellar material and a return of the outer segments toward a normal configuration. The rods recovered more rapidly and more completely than the cones during a period up to one-month post-operative retinal reattachment. © 1969.
