COUPLED EQUATIONS AND EFFECTIVE POTENTIALS FOR DIRECT PROCESSES

The properties of the effective potential matrix which appears in an exact set of coupled equations are examined for the direct rearrangement collisions, especially the non-locality which arises due to inelastic channels and particle rearrangement. A symmetric parametrization of the effective potential is introduced such that the inelastic distortions on the elastic and pickup channels can be treated simultaneously within the same approximation, thus reducing the number of adjustable parameters in the theory. The usual distorted wave method may also be modified for elastic amplitudes, and this extension leads to additional constraints on the optical model potentials. Possibility of estimating the inelastic channel propagators from the shell-model calculation is explored. © 1969.
