Reaction between (dimethyl ether)-triborane(7) and 1,2-dimethyldiborane(6) gave an improved synthesis for 2-methyltetraborane(10). The isomeric 1,2-, 2,2-, and 2,4-dimethyltetraborane(10) derivatives were obtained in the same reaction. The substances were characterized by the glpc separation, by melting point, and by mass spectrometric analysis. Substituent locations were determined by interpretation of the nB nmr spectrum. Uniquely characteristic intensities for bridge stretching frequencies in the infrared spectra were found for each substance, as were also some characteristic relative abundances observed in the high-resolution mass spectra. © 1969, American Chemical Society.
