VISUALIZATION OF FLUID DISPLACEMENTS IN POROUS MEDIA USING COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IMAGING

Peters, E.J. and Hardham, W.D., 1990. Visualization of fluid displacements in porous media using computed tomography imaging. J. Pet. Sci. Eng., 4: 155-168. Computed tomography (CT) imaging was used to visualize corefloods in order to examine the in-situ displacement mechanisms. Both miscible and immiscible displacements were visualized. Results show that CT imaging of corefloods can be used to determine dispersion coefficients, to characterize the spatial distribution of porosity heterogeneities of the porous medium and to gain new insights into displacement phenomena. Further, CT imaging provides quantitative data that can be used to guide the development of numerical models of the displacements.
