A ceria (CeO2) support material has been prepared by thermal decomposition of cerium nitrate. It has been impregnated with platinum to produce a supported metal catalyst with small, highly dispersed Pt particles. In addition, model/reference systems have been prepared by evaporation and sputtering of Pt and Au onto the same ceria. The temperature-programmed reduction profile of the catalyst showed significant H2 uptake at 124°C, 360°C and 785°C. H2/O2 titrations showed that there was no exchange after reduction at 200°C, and exchange was restored after reduction at 400°C. Changes in catalyst structure were investigated for these reduction temperatures using microreactor treatments with transfer under nitrogen to the atomic resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) as well as ex situ controlled-environment TEM experiments. Electron microscopical characterisation has included surface profile imaging of both real impregnated catalyst and the model systems, and some dynamic metal-substrate effects have been observed. © 1990.
