NEUTRON-DIFFRACTION STUDY OF DEUTERIUM - IMPORTANCE OF THE INELASTIC-SCATTERING CORRECTIONS

The structure factor of deuterium gas has been measured, close to the critical region, by S.N. Ishmahev et al. (Sov. Phys. JETP 68 (1988) 1403) and by M. Zoppi et al. (Phys. Rev. A 39 (1989) 4684) by means of neutron scattering. The results, qualitatively similar, show discrepancies which are above the estimated experimental accuracies, however. The different scattering angles used in the two experiments (22-135-degrees for the former and 5-20-degrees for the latter), and the consequently different inelastic scattering corrections, are probably responsible for the inconsistency. Simple considerations show that using small scattering angles gives a better reliability of the results.
