The diffusion rates of gold in copper have been determined in the temperature range 400-1050°C using an instantaneous-source method and radio-activation analysis. Measurements were made for both poly-crystalline and single-crystal copper. There is clear evidence of grain-boundary diffusion occurring at and below 750°C. For volume diffusion, from the single-crystal experiments, the results obtained are Ql = 42.6 ± 1.0 kcal mole-1 and D0(l) = 0.03 ± 0.002 cm2 sec-1; and for grain-boundary diffusion, Qb = 20 ± 3 kcal mole-1 and D0(b) = 0.01 ± 0.004 cm2 sec-1. © 1969.
