Enterocytes of hive bees, foragers and winter bees were isolated enzymatically. The transport of leucine into those cells depends nonlinearly on concentration and can be inhibited by isoleucine or by a reduction in temperature but neither dinitrophenol nor ouabain nor the absence of oxygen influence the uptake. Although diffusion accounts for a large part of the transport, a carrier-mediated transport system that does not need energy is assumed. © 1990.
