摘要
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are prepared by introducing hydrocarbon gases into a saddle-field source. The advantages of using this source are that the substrate is shielded from the plasma, allowing heat-sensitive materials to be coated, and the beam from the source is uncharged (without external neutralisation) so that insulating materials can be coated. This technique, which has been used successfully to apply hard, unreactive, impervious coatings on germanium and various metals and oxides, has been extended to coating plastics used in medical and bioengineering applications. DLC adheres strongly to some plastics providing a hard but flexible coating. In vitro tests have shown that DLC is biocompatible and allows cells to grow without inflammatory response and with cell integrity maintained.
