HYDROFORMYLATION OF PROPYLENE CATALYZED OVER POLYMER-IMMOBILIZED RHCL(CO)(PPH3)2 - EFFECT OF CROSS-LINK RATIO AND FTIR STUDY

RhCl(CO)(PPh3)2 was immobilized to the 2, 4 and 8% crosslinked gel-type poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) copolymer (PS/DVB) and 20% cross linked macroreticular-type PS/DVB. The catalytic properties of these catalysts were evaluated in the hydroformylation of propylene. The catalysts immobilized on the gel-type PS/DVB can be re-used without loss in activity. The activity was influenced by the degree of crosslink, and selectivity (n-butyraldehyde/i-butyraldehyde) increased with decrease of crosslink ratio. FTIR study indicated that RhCl(CO)(PPh3)2 immobilized on the 8% crosslinked gel-type PS/DVB membrane (PSM/Rh) was unstable, and dicarbonyl species was appeared above 373 K. The results of EDAX analysis of polymer bead indicate that the distribution of elements in the catalyst is influenced by the degree of crosslink for the gel-type PS/DVB. © 1990.
