摘要
A comparative investigation of sliding wear in couples consisting of a lubricated steel ball or a diamond spherical segment on a steel plate was performed. Fine polished surfaces, a low load and alternating motion (R(a) < 0.02 mum and P(max) < 0.33 x Vickers hardness of the plate) were used. The wear track on the plate was observed with SEM after running times between a few seconds and several days. Sliding wear in the form of free wear particles is a direct or an indirect consequence of groove formation. If no grooves are formed, as in the diamond-on-steel couple, no wear particles appear. For groove formation, the presence of asperities or transferred material on the ball is not necessary. The grooves are produced by agglomerations of wear particles generated between ball and plate or by single wear particles or hard comtaminant particles. The ball ''rides'' partially on these particles, producing the grooves. When diamond is used, in the absence of sliding wear, fatigue wear in the form of micro-pitting appears after a sufficient number of strokes.
