POTENTIOMETRIC STUDIES OF FREE ACIDS AND ION-EXCHANGE RESINS AS AN AID TO ELUCIDATING CHARGE-PH ISOTHERMS IN PAPER WOODPULPS

摘要
Charge-pH isotherms for p-toluenesulphonic acid and glucuronic acid are presented. The experimental technique consisted of titrating these acids in the presence of hydrochloric acid, which controlled the initial pH of the medium. By subtracting the effect of the stronger acid using a blank titration of the hydrochloric acid solution, it was possible to obtain data to plot charge-pH isotherms for the acids referred to. The same experimental technique was extended to two ion-exchange resins - a resin containing only carboxylic acid groups and a resin containing only sulphonic acid groups. In the light of the results obtained it is possible to understand more clearly the nature of these isotherms, their limitations in the determination of the total charge in paper woodpulps and to correct a few misconceptions associated with these curves.
