摘要
Constraints caused by interpreting Mach bands as specular highlights are shown to limit the number of surfaces that match a triangular luminance grating. We classify these periodic surfaces in terms of the even and odd symmetries of elementary building blocks. A comparison of perceived and calculated glossiness yields insight into the way that brightness is segregated to provide shape and shininess properties.
