14 different metals are studied with respect to their suitability for decoration of surface steps on NaCl crystals. Thereby a distinct correlation between resolution and heat of sublimation is observed. Resolution and contrast are improved with decreasing substrate temperature. In cases of Se, Bi, Pb, In, and Sn at 150 °C the decorating particles are found to be located at the lower level of the step, whereas for Au and Ag at that temperature no evidence could be obtained for a preferred position with respect to the step level. From the results conditions for attaining an optimum decoration of surface steps are derived. Copyright © 1979 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA
