OBSERVATION OF 2 PHASES WITHIN THE CUBIC PHASE REGION OF A TERNARY SURFACTANT SOLUTION

We have investigated the details of the cubic phase region in the ternary phase diagram of didode-cyldimethylammonium bromide/cyclohexane/water mixtures by small-angle X-ray scattering. Both body-centered and primitive cubic symmetries have been detected, separated by a two-phase region. Analyses of the lattice parameter as a function of water content have revealed that these phases are bicontin-uous, and the mixtures self-assemble to form interpenetrating simple cubic and diamond networks separated by an oil-swollen bilayer lying on a minimal surface. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
