Corporate Management is in trouble. In the early 1980s when this approach first began to dominate thinking about reform, it was claimed that a new and comprehensive decision‐making framework based on total‐system efficiency would be put in place. A new age of leaner organisations, clearer objectives and greater accountability was promised. However the practical achievements of the framework which made these promises have so far been small, the costs high, and the means employed controversial.
