EFFECT OF WATER-CONTENT ON ANODIC-OXIDATION OF ALUMINUM IN GAMMA-BUTYROLACTONE BASED ELECTROLYTE

Aluminum specimen was anodized in gamma-butyrolactone(gamma-BL) containing tetraethylammonium maleate(TEAM) and tetramethylammonium phthalate (TMAP) at a constant current of 10 mAcm-2. The electrochemical behavior during anodization and the dielectric properties of the anodic oxide film formed were studied as a function of water content in the electrolytes. The anodic oxide film formed at 50 V in TMAP/gamma-BL(0.04 % H2O) showed the smallest value in dielectric loss and the largest one in the electrostatic capacity, which more than two times as large as that formed in the electrolyte with 1.0 % H2O. The high electrostatic value was found to be due to low value of the anodic oxide film thickness evaluated by XPS measurement.
