Algorithmic ADCs designed using current mode techniques are presented. The current mode techniques do not require large supply voltages and reduce the need for high quality amplifiers and large linear capacitors on which to store the signal. Consequently, the resulting ADCs can be made very small while still providing high sampling rates. In this paper a variety of different circuit structures useful in ADCs are discussed. Experimental results using a 3 μm CMOS process are used to demonstrate that the techniques can be used to achieve small VLSI compatible ADCs.
