The primary photochemical events of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) were compared with those of halorhodopsin (hR) by subpicosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. The absorption and stimulated emission spectra display similar features. It is proposed that the isomerization reaction and relaxation to the fluorescent state occur simultaneously from the Franck-Condon excited state. The quantum yield of cis-trans isomerization in bR is about twice that in hR.
