EFFECTS OF PH ON METHANOGENESIS AND SULFATE REDUCTION IN THERMOPHILIC (55-DEGREES-C) UASB REACTORS

The thermophilic anaerobic treatment of a synthetic wastewater containing volatile fatty acids and sulphate was studied at 55-degrees-C and at different pH values, using UASB reactors inoculated with granular sludge. At pH> 8 methanogenesis was inhibited, and this resulted in a predominance of the sulphate-reduction process. At more neutral pH values (6.75-7.4) about 50% of the organic waste was removed via methanogenesis and sulphate reduction. Sulphate reducers were found to be less sensitive to temporary pH variations than methanogens. Sulphate reduction recovered within 30 days following a pH-shock, whereas methane production remained nil during this period
