THE EFFECT OF CARBON-DIOXIDE INDUCED ANESTHESIA ON FECUNDITY OF CALLOSOBRUCHUS-MACULATUS (COLEOPTERA, BRUCHIDAE)

The use of CO2 to anaesthetise freshly emerged adult Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) is shown to affect fecundity. Increasing the time of exposure to 100% CO2 atmosphere from 30 s to 32 min significantly decreased 40 h fecundity compared to controls. A significant dose-response was seen when beetles were exposed for 8 min to increasing concentrations of CO2 atmosphere. Lifetime fecundity was significantly reduced after exposure to 100% CO2 atmosphere for 8 min.
