摘要
The third-order nonlinear susceptibility of all-trans beta-carotene dissolved in benzene or carbon tetrachloride has been measured by third-harmonic generation at several incident laser wavelengths from 1.030 to 1.221-mu-m. Its magnitude grows from 1.8 x 10(-11) esu at 1.030-mu-m to 3.8 X 10(-11) esu at 1.221-mu-m. Its phase is close to 180-degrees and constant indicating the essential-lack of one-, two-, and three-photon resonances in each of their corresponding spectral regions. The absence of any two-photon resonance in the 515-611 nm spectral region is particularly significant, for it is here where the photobiologically important 2 1A(g) electronic state of beta-carotene is thought to be located.
