The inflammatory fibroid polyp should be differentiated from the glandular mucosal tumors such as hyperplastic polyps and the neoplastic adenomatous polyps, the larger of which may be premalignant. It must also be differentiated from the polypoid tumors arising in smooth muscle and from other less common mesenchymal nonlymphoid tumors. Most important, polypoid adenocarcinoma must be ruled out. Although all these lesions are sometimes similar radiographically, their differing biological behavior and, therefore, their treatment require a more specific pathologic diagnosis than 'gastric polyp.'
