摘要
In areas undergoing urbanization it is often desirable to separate land uses that are not visually compatible, such as major highways from residential districts. Information is needed about the ability of various types of forest to provide a screen, or buffer, between visually incompatible land uses. Measurements taken in deciduous and coniferous stands in summer and winter show that screening is lowest within continuous stands with sparse understory and highest at the edge of the forest where understory vegetation is thick. Management to encourage understory vegetation can improve the screening potential of forested land. © 1979.
