摘要
Alkali metal cations supported on silica are effective base catalysts for the production of methacrylic acid via the condensation of propionic acid with formaldehyde. Activity and selectivity are dependent on the choice of alkali metal cation and increase in the order Li < Na < K < Cs. Activity also increases with increasing cation loading. A model for the dependence of product selectivity on cation loading is proposed.
