COMPARISON OF SAMPLE PREPARATION METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE GROSS ENERGY CONCENTRATION OF FRESH SILAGE

Six preparation methods for fresh silage prior to the determination of gross energy were compared at each of two sample sizes. The preparation methods included cutting with scissors, grinding with liquid nitrogen, freezing and cutting with a band saw, freezing, shredding and mincing using two sieve sizes, and chopping in a commercial food processor. Overall, the liquid nitrogen grinding method gave the highest precision without significant loss of moisture. An increased sample size from 2 to 4 g gave greater precision, allowing the number of duplicates per sample to be decreased.
