A STEM STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF PRECIPITATION ON GRAIN-BOUNDARY CHEMISTRY IN AISI 304 STEEL

The development of (Fe, Cr, Mo, Ni and P) segregation and (Fe, Cr, Ni and Mn) diffusion profiles around many grain boundaries in AISI 304 stainless steel after solution treatment and ageing has been followed using TEM/EDX with a very fine electron probe. Boundary migration due to M23C6 precipitation causes the majority of diffusion profiles to be asymmetric, with minima/maxima away from the boundary plane. Levels of Cr and Mo segregation are gradually reduced during ageing. The reasons for this are considered, and the results related to stress-corrosion cracking behaviour.
