摘要
A model has been developed to determine the brightness distribution of vacuum arc cathode spots. The model calculates the specific radiation from the particular spot regions. It is shown that the line radiation from neutrals is a major component of the emitted radiation. Since the distribution of neutrals is not directly related to the current transfer through the cathode surface, current density measurements based on photography of the radiating plasma cloud are questionable. Different experimental techniques of spot investigation (photography with various exposure times, streak investigation) yielding different results for the spot diameter are described briefly. Simulation of these techniques shows that the experimental results can be consistently explained by assuming the following spot parameters: possible spot substructures (fragments) with diameters smaller than 10 mum and separations of 10-30 mum, elementary time of fragment motion of a few nanoseconds and fragment displacement of a few micrometers.
