摘要
Optimal feed rate profiles for various fed-batch fermentation processes have been developed. Various fed-batch fermentation processes have been classified into three types, Types I-III, based on the form (nonmonotonicity) of the specific growth and product formation rates. The optimal feeding sequence is then proposed for each type based on a conjecture that in general the cells must be grown optimally first and then the product. As discussed in the text when the initial cell concentration is substantially high, the optimal policy may immediately favor the product formation rather than growing more cells.
