Kinetics of Ostwald ripening in emulsions of aliphatic C9C16 hydrocarbons stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was studied by means of photon correlation spectroscopy. Two kinds of systems were studied. In the first case, the emulsion medium was a diluted molecular solution of SDS; in the second one, the medium was a concentrated micellar solution of SDS. The experimental values of absolute Ostwald ripening rates were compared with the theoretical values. It was found that the experimental values are systematically higher by a factor of ∼2.5 than the theoretical ones. It was shown that the micellar solubility of hydrocarbons did not contribute essentially to the kinetics of Ostwald ripening in the investigated systems. A method for evaluation of the solubility of organic liquids in water, with a very low detection limit of about ∼10-11 ml/ml, was proposed. © 1990.
