Small intestinal motility was recorded in diabetics with and without peripheral neuropathy, and with and without diarrhea and compared with normal controls. With the onset of symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, there was a progressive decrease in upper small intestinal tone and an increase in the frequency and amplitude of large waves (peristaltic activity).
