Samples based on the intermetallic compound Al3Ti have been made by mechanical alloying the elemental components and sintering. Intense deformation of the compound was achieved by extrusion at 600-degrees-C and the mechanisms of deformation are examined. A major mode of deformation under such conditions is ordered twinning of the type [112]{111} which does not disturb the D0(22) order. Significant deformation also occurs by single 1/2[110] dislocation motion on (001) planes, as well as some deformation by the movement of perfect 1/2[112] dislocations. The analysis of dislocation configurations and determination of various fault energies provides useful information in the search for more ductile Al3X alloys based on the availability of mechanisms of plasticity.
