We make use of the Poincaré commutators for the generators of the inhomogeneous Lorentz transformation to prove that the generators are unique when field operators are given and form an irreducible ring. We further prove, under the assumptions a) the vacuum is nondegenerate, b) there is no massless particle, and c) there exists the symmetric energy-momentum tensor, that only the generators from which the vacuum expectation value is subtracted satisfy the Poincaré commutators. The self-stress of a single particle is also discussed from the viewpoint of the Poincaré commutators, and the generalized Pais-Epstein formula of a single particle in motion is derived in a simple manner. © 1969 Società Italiana di Fisica.
