THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ALIGNED MICROSTRUCTURE DURING MELT PROCESSING OF BI2SR2CACU2OX (BSCCO-2212) DOCTOR-BLADED FILMS

Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (2212) thick films have been made by the doctor-blade technique and melt processed on Ag, Au, and MgO substrates. The growth and alignment of the 2212 phase have been investigated using quenched samples. The 2212 grains appear to grow directly from the liquid with random orientation, not preferentially at the substrate/oxide interface or at second phases. The free surface of the film plays an important role in 2212 alignment. Within about 25 mum of the free surface the 2212 grains were found to be well aligned with the free surface and the second-phase particles were small. Beyond about 25 mum from the free surface, the 2212 was not as well aligned and the second phases were larger. Well-aligned 2212 films ( < 25 mum thick) were obtained by melt processing on Ag, Au, and MgO substrates.
