EFFECTS OF LANTHANOID SUBSTITUTION ON SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND MODULATED STRUCTURE OF BI2SR2CUOY

The various lanthanoid-substituted Bi2201 phases, Bi2Sr2-xLnxCuOy, were prepared to examine oxygen content, structure and superconductivity. The difference of substituents with a fixed amount has little effect on the oxygen content and the lattice parameters, but strongly affects the superconductivity and the period of modulation. The maximum T(c) rapidly decreases from 27 K for La to 12 K for Eu with decreasing ionic radius of Ln3+, reaching 0 K for Ln = Gd, in contrast to rare-earth substitution in Bi2212 phase. The modulation period also changes remarkably with the different Ln3+ substitution, although the oxygen content remained almost the same.
