A metallurgical study of the system Y1-xUxPd3 with 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.2 has been performed by means of X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. Our analysis shows that Y1-xUxPd3 does not melt congruently in the range 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.2. This leads to local variations in the composition parameter x of up to about 30% of the nominal concentration on a scale of 10 mu m. Heat treatment was attempted to improve the homogeneity, but full homogeneity could not be achieved with annealing up to 1500 degrees C.
