摘要
The nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of aqueous solutions of mercaptosuccinic acid have been studied over a wide pH range. The chemical shifts of the non-labile C-H protons follow the usual titration curve. However, the two vicinal coupling constants display a maximum in one case and a simultaneous minimum in the other case. This observation is interpreted as a result of changes in the rotamer populations caused by electrostatic and steric effects. The relative populations of the three classical rotamers were calculated at various values of pH and were found to be in qualitative agreement with malic acid at a pH where the comparison is valid. © 1969.
