Adenine-3 (ad-3) mutations induced by nitrous acid (NA) in a balanced heterokaryon of Neurospora crassa were analyzed to determine whether the genetic damage was confined to a single locus in each mutant. In this test system ad-3 mutations can result from point mutation (ad-3R) or multilocus deletion (ad-3IR). Only one ad-3IR mutation was found among 418 NA-induced ad-3 mutations. These results in the ad-3 region of Linkage Group I of N. crassa, but that the NA-induced mutations are confined to a single locus. © 1969.
