COMBINED EFFECT OF GAMMA-IRRADIATION AND ORGANIC-SOLVENTS ON SOME STRUCTURAL-PROPERTIES OF COTTON FIBERS

摘要
The combined effects of gamma-irradiation and organic solvents on some structural properties of cotton fibers were investigated by following the changes in their X-ray diffraction and infrared spectra. Gamma-Irradiation of cotton fibres in air results in the oxidation of the cotton cellulose and the formation of carbonyl groups, while irradiation in the presence of an organic solvent enhances the degree of oxidation of the fibers. It was found that irradiation in a mixture of two solvents causes significant changes in the degree of oxidation and the degree of crystallinity. The extent of the changes in these two properties depends upon the concentration and the dipole moment of the solvents in the mixtures.
