SOURCES OF TOXIC TRACE-ELEMENTS IN URBAN AIR IN ILLINOIS

Samples of airborne inhalable particulate matter (PM-10) were collected in southeast Chicago and East St. Louis and analyzed for 29 trace elements using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and neutron activation analysis. Wind trajectory analysis, factor analysis, and chemical mass balance modeling were used to determine the most important sources of the toxic trace elements. Industrial complexes were the most significant sources of copper and cadmium in East St. Louis (smelters) and of manganese and chromium in southeast Chicago (steel mills). It is concluded that some sources have a large effect on the concentrations of specific toxic metals in the atmosphere without significantly affecting overall PM-10 levels.
