CRYSTAL-FIELD EFFECTS IN RARE-EARTH COMPOUNDS - INFLUENCE OF 2ND NEAREST NEIGHBORS

Second neighbours are taken into account in the empirical calculation of crystal field parameters of Nd3+ in mixed oxides using the covalo-electrostatic model. The goal consists in determining general rules for compounds belonging to different chemical families. The behaviours are examined and classified according to the rare earth-ligand distances and the location of second neighbours in the periodic table. The method is improved for what concerns that scale factors. The following 11 compounds are examined: Nd2O3, Y2O3:Nd3+, NdVO4, YVO4:Nd3+, NdAlO3, YAlO3:Nd3+, Y3Ga5O12:Nd3+, Ca0.8 Mg0.2Al11.8O19Nd0.2, Y3Al5O12:Nd3+, NdP5O14 and Nd3Sb5O12. Second neighbours belonging to the IIIA column display a distinctly original behaviour.
