2915 amber mutants of bacteriophage T4B have been obtained by hydroxylamine treatment. With the help of spot tests, we have managed to distribute the mutants with 65 genes. The number of amber mutations per gene varies from 1 to 196. On the basis of data obtained and on the basis of earlier studies of amber mutation distribution in gene 43, we have come to the conclusion that the frequency of induction of amber mutations and the specificity of their distribution in genes may depend on the following characteristics: (a) the size of the gene; (b) the distribution of codons UGG and CAG, coding glutamine and tryptophan, respectively; (c) the presence of some regions in protein molecule controlled by gene, which express different sensitivity ot suppression; (d) the nucleotide position during the packing of DNA in the phage core. © 1969.
