High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been used to simultaneously determine the amounts of antioxidant (Santonox(R)R), peroxide, acetophenone and α-methylstyrene present in crosslinked-polyethylene cable samples and molded specimens, as well as to detect some other peroxide decomposition products. It was found that the antioxidant is grafted to the polymer chains after curing (even after partial curing). Results also seem to suggest that a reduction of the phenolic character and perhaps of the effectiveness of the antioxidant might result from this grafting process. Peroxide decomposition products were found to depend on the curing conditions used and to affect the dielectric behavior in some cases. Various XLPE and EPR materials have also been examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and experimental procedures were developed for evaluating the degree of crosslinking by DSC.
