AN EXPERIMENTAL-OBSERVATION OF A NEW TYPE OF INTERMITTENCY

A novel hysteretic form of regular intermittency has been observed experimentally in a variant of the Taylor-Couette problem where the fluid flow is confined between a stationary outer cylinder and a rotating inner cylinder and end plates. The results cannot all be explained within the standard Pomeau-Manneville classification of intermittency, and an extension to this theory is proposed to account for the observed phenomena. A satisfactory agreement is found between experiment and theory both for the reinjection burst frequency scaling law and the influence of noise on the regularity of the bursts.
