SOME CLINICAL POTENTIALS OF CHLOROPHENOXYISOBUTYRATE (CLOFIBRATE) THERAPY (HYPERLIPIDEMIA-ANGINA PECTORIS-BLOOD SLUDGING-DIABETIC NEUROPATHY)

Clofibrate (Atromid-SR) is shown to be an effective hypolipidemic agent and is well tolerated over long periods. To achieve therapeutic effects 2 Gm. of the drug daily is usually required. Also significant were: a high incidence of relief from disabling attacks of angina pectoris in arteriosclerotic subjects, diabetic and non-diabetic; evidence that reduced caloric intake and reduction of body weight enhanced the effectiveness of clofibrate; marked alleviation of blood sludging in conjunctival vessels followed, in each instance, the reduction of excessive lipidemia; and dramatic subjective and objective improvement in cases of refractory diabetic neuropathy. Of three patients with essential hypercholesterolemia, two were asymptomatic. The hypercholesterolemia was corrected temporarily by clofibrate therapy in one of these, but in the other the hyperlipidemia has progressively decreased. The third patient has progressed from years of chronic ill health to normal well being and with decreasing size of xanthomas as the hyperlipidemia has decreased during five months of clofibrate therapy. © 1968.
